Horry County assistant principals get boost from academy

Aspiring assistant principals in Horry County Schools can take advantage of a unique learning opportunity to prepare for their goals of eventually becoming school principals.

The district program, called the AP Academy, is designed to deepen the knowledge of assistant principals, or APs, about all aspects of a principal’s job.

“Many of the day-to-day experiences of an AP might not encompass all of the components of school administration,” said Teal Britton, school district spokeswoman. “The academy gives a platform for leadership training and for all the other areas of which you have to have knowledge and proficiency to manage an entire school.”

A 4-year-old blonde Labrador retriever, Marley captured judges’ votes last year with kisses that Saundra Parler, her owner, describes as wet and soft but not slobbery.

The canine kissing contest is one part of the Conway Canine Christmas Costume Contest sponsored by Conway Seed and Garden Center, Rivertown Bed & Biscuit, Santee Cooper, PCRX Computers and HTC. The best costume is also determined, as is best singer, best dancer, best trick and more.

Citadel deals with fallout from sex-abuse claim

At The Citadel, a storied bastion of Southern heritage, a barracks plaque enshrines a quote from Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee: “Duty is the sublimest word in the English language.”

Now the state military college is doing some very public soul searching over whether the school indeed did its duty by nine young boys in the Charleston area who say they were abused by a man who once was a counselor at the school’s summer camp.

As authorities prepare to prosecute ex-counselor Louis ReVille for crimes allegedly committed after he left the school, the Citadel’s president has acknowledged that the college should have contacted police in 2007 when a former camper told Citadel officials he had been abused by ReVille five years earlier. Instead, the college conducted its own internal investigation – which a school attorney hoped at the time would prevent a criminal investigation or a lawsuit, according to emails – but did not tell police.
